also, if you’re white and speak spanish better than i can i will basically hate you and side-eye you and fucking resent your existence. ESPECIALLY IF YOUR PARENTS DON’T SPEAK IT AND YOU DO

like fuck you. fuck you. fuck you. learning my language is reclaiming my cultural roots and trying to close the diaspora in my lineage.

learning a language is a luxury to you. One that cost me a large part of my culture.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

whaaaaat?

Learning a language is now somehow appropriation? How could a PoC possibly be oppressed by a white person learning a language?

Oh my god what

“God, you’re so terrible; stop trying to expand your cultural understanding!”

Really people learning other languages is not taking away from culture

Do you want everyone to just learn one language and never talk to anyone from other cultures

Yeah that’ll be nice then we’ll have no more appropriation and we can all go back to thinking people from other parts of the world are different species

Also you must really not know what “diaspora” means because people learning another language furthers that language’s diaspora

Like

Do you have any idea what the fucking hell you’re spouting off about

que mierda es esto?!

Seriously.

“You put the time and effort into learning a second language—SO LET ME SIDE EYE YOU BECUZ APPROPREEEACION!”

Bullshit. Learning another language is imperative in a globalized economy, first of all. Secondly, Spanish is especially crucial in he US states with a large Hispanic minority, so having that second language makes sound social, political and economic sense
Third, it’s fucking hard as hell to learn another language, so don’t pooh-pooh someone else’s efforts. The fact that you are too lazy to maintain your mother-tongue, especially when immersed in the culture is your own fucking fault and noone else’s.

I am so sick of tumblr!tits in the social justice community bitching about their own laziness and calling it oppression.

Oops Tabi guess it was a mistake to learn my partner’s first language. Cuz I’m white, see, so our relationship doesn’t matter, I’m just An Oppressor.

jesus fucking christ do you all just

not get

that this is a POC being angry and you are basically telling them they are not allowed to be angry because of this that is the DEFINITION of white privilege

this post is a fucking M E S S

also since when are latino/hispanic communities POC? what is that bullshit?

what is going on

there is nothing wrong with people learning spanish.

there is nothing wrong with people learning about different cultures.

it makes people knowledgeable about the world.

this is all a m e s s.

breaking news: hispanics and latin@s are considered people of color. that’s it. that’s the end of the that point.

the OP talked about feeling angry and frustrated because white people could freely learn spanish while her family had to assimilate and learn english, because the dominant white culture demanded it.

because whites in america can CHOOSE to learn spanish, while in the OP’s family it was considered worthless.

because there’s no stigma attached to white people speaking spanish but there is when poc speak their native languages in america

the OP expressed her anger and i’d like it if you stopped invalidating her experiences/emotions

i’m Latino and i am in no way comfortable with us falling into the POC umbrella.

i repeat this is not white privilege.

it’s also my culture and MY experience.

that’s fine and it’s fine if you don’t personally identify as a poc, but as a general term poc refers to non-whites. i apologize if i have offended you when i wrote that statement.

however, i still stand by my point that the OP has every right to express the anger she feels when trying to (re)learn a language her family was forced to forget in order to assimilate, while whites have a choice of learning/speaking spanish without any stigma

Well you may not identify as POC, (that is fine because that is up to you) however Latinos are considered to be POC because although not everyone is may be of color, a majority of the population is of color. And Plath is right, the term POC is used for anyone who is not white.

However the OP has every right to be angry.

Hispanos in the Untied States HAVE to learn English. They don’t have the choice, because if they don’t, they’ll mostly likely be discriminated against and unable to work here. You can’t blame their families for thinking that Spanish is useless when they see that in this country, you HAVE to put English first or else you don’t be able to get ahead.

Meanwhile WOC have the option of learning a second language and not have this stigma of knowing it against them.

I don’t know who you are, or what your experiences are but this is completely white privilege.

WOC never had to be put in a Spanish ESL class purely based on the fact that they were Hispanos because the school thought that they didn’t know English (despite them not knowing any Spanish in the first place).

WOC are never told stop speaking Spanish by random people in the streets, who justify themselves by the statement, “We’re in America and so you should only speak English here.”

WOC aren’t told by their parents to not speak Spanish outside the house because you have to place the culture that is presented by the people of the United States after your own culture

I can tell you because this is also MY culture and MY experience.
And guess what, I live in the most diverse place in US, I live in New York City and probably in one of the most diverse areas in New York City too.

Everyone has the right to learn a second, third or fourth language. Heck I know two other languages other than English and Spanish. Learning languages is amazing.

However the native speaker and the OP has fucking right to be angry about how white privilege has forced us to place our culture second. This double standard does exist  I don’t understand how people are putting down the OP’s opinion. No one has the right to tell someone their opinion doesn’t matter, count or stupid.

(And this isn’t post isn’t tell you that your opinion doesn’t matter, it is informing you about how this IS white privilege.)

People of Colour

tomhiddly:

Person of colour is a term used primarily to describe any person who is not white. The term is meant to be inclusive among non-white groups, emphasizing common experiences of racismPeople of colour was introduced as a preferable replacement to both non-white and minority, which are also inclusive, because it frames the subject positively; non-white defines people in terms of what they are not [white], and minority frequently carries a subordinate connotation.

HAPPY 37TH BIRTHDAY, MARION COTILLARD!

b. 30 September 1975 | Paris, France.

I wonder what would have become of Marion Cotillard had she not succeeded in becoming the actress she is today. ‘If it never happened?’ she replies. ‘Wow! I would have been…’ And her voice falls silent. There’s a lenghty pause, part of her lost in the unthinkable. ‘I don’t know,’ she says eventually. ‘I believe that you are where you should be and I believe that things that happen to you happen for a reason. So if it had never happened it would have been because I was meant to do something else.’ [x]

“The installation unfolds against a long projection wall with two mirror walls on the side thus visually expanding like a universe. the basic visual, made up of sequences, motifs and graphic translations of various units of time measurement acts as a world clock and evokes the intertwining of time, between past, present and future.”
